101 year old woman evicted from house she’d lived in for 58 years

This should not happen to my mother or yours. From WXYZ TV in Detroit:

At 101-years-old, Texana Hollis is completely broken hearted. She has good reason to be. She was evicted from her Southwest Detroit home where she has lived for the past 58 years. In a wheelchair and suffering from high blood pressure and heart trouble – neighbors say court officers kicked her out of her home and left her sitting on the sidewalk, alongside all of her furniture and belongings.

Texana’s close friend and neighbor, Laurie Ridgell says, “We don’t even treat animals like that in the city of Detroit.”

That saddest part, is that Texana and her late husband Ira Sr., owned this home outright. So it was bought and paid for. But in 2003, Texana’s son Warren admits he convinced his mom to sign that house over to a “reverse mortgage” company in return for a sum of $32,000. Money he claims would go to repair the house. But . . . Warren admits he bought a car, made a donation to the church and spent the remaining five thousand dollars on other things.

So where is Texana living now? Well, right now, she is being cared for at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. She was rushed by ambulance to the hospital last night, suffering from severe anxiety.

Fortunately the story has a better ending, if not an altogether happy one. Balloon Juice:

Fortunately for Ms. Hollis, the government—yes, the evil Freedom-sucking government—took pity on her and decided to help. A Department of House and Urban Development spokesperson announced yesterday that it would pay the property taxes and allow Ms. Hollis to return to her home.

As any good conservative will tell you, it’s all about personal responsibility. Raise a bad son and you’ll eventually pay the price. It just took Texana an unusually long time to pay that price.

If Wolf Blitzer had, instead of his hypothetical about the “healthy uninsured 30 year old who becomes so ill he requires 6 months of intensive care,” asked Ron Paul about this lady — I wonder how he and the audience of GOP primary voters would have responded? People of advanced age — who are often peculiarly vulnerable both mentally and physically — are a compelling case against Libertarian values, it seems to me.

I suppose a proper libertarian would note that she was evicted for failure to tax property taxes. So, assuming they oppose property taxes, the libertarian can object to the eviction on the ground that she did nothing wrong, without wrestling with question of whether the govt ought to have the power to evict and, if so, whether it should show a little decency in the use of that power.
