Welcome back, Mr. President

Reader Horton, via a comment to this post:

Liberals can be such a pissy lot. Yes, these proposals probably won’t get enacted and even if they do they won’t make a huge difference. Yes, Obama will get savaged by the kooks on the right. Yes, Obama will get knocked by the smarty pants folks for not picking a better proposal (which would even less chance of passage).

But, can’t we for once just sit back and take some pleasure in the indisputable fact that our guy is incredibly bright, thoughtful and articulate. Not only does he not make us embarassed but he actually makes us proud. He can visit another country and engage with its leaders without making us cringe.

It’s not that Obama just happens to be a liberal. It’s not that there are plenty of Republicans like him but some quirk in history happened to make him President rather than them. No, that’s not it at all. There aren’t people like him on the right. Not even close. They are an appalling disgraceful menace to this country.

Would it be so horrible for us, just this once, to shut up, listen, and then later say with pride — “that’s my guy.”

Hear, hear! A large majority of Americans see Government, not as an alien or harmful force, but as a collection of human beings working on behalf of all of us to do our bidding as best they can. By making that point so effectively in his speech tonight, and by reminding us that Government embodies much of the social compact we have made to each other, he took an important step forward. I cannot be the only wandering liberal whom President Obama won back with his speech tonight.

About Guy N. Texas

Guy N. Texas is the pen name of a lawyer living in Dallas, who is now a liberal. He was once conservative, but this word has so morphed in meaning that he can no longer call himself that in good conscience. Guy has no political aspirations. He speaks only for himself.
